Thinking about that time Bush dodged two shoes yeeted at him in 2008 and then continued the press conference by showing sympathy for the person and overall just handling the situation gracefully.

I know for a fact I've forgotten almost everything else about Bush as a president, but somehow that one scenario sticks in my head both for the ridiculous nature but also as a memory of politicians not being obvious trolls in public? If that even makes sense..

@rune Bush, possibly the last acceptable republican president.

@LovesTha @rune The thing about the shoes sounds cool, but he also ordered the murder of a million humans in Iraq. To me that's more in the 'unimaginably horrible' than 'acceptable' category.

@lukas @rune I'm not saying that was good or acceptable, but he was very middle of the road in his actions there. Nearly everyone supported it at the time. And particularly amongst Republican presidents, they all would make that move.

@LovesTha @rune Idk man, if Saddam Hussein, had ordered the killing of a million americans (you would probably know some of them) and then afterward had dodged some shoes in a cool way at a press conference, would he have been an 'acceptable' Iraq president? What if almost everyone in Iraq had supported it? Or would he be a vile war criminal who didn't deserve a smile for the rest of his life?

Uspol, history

@lukas @rune I didn't say "the last acceptable US president", the Republican qualifier meant I was very heavily grading against his peers (and what I suspect the next ones will look like)

Uspol, history

@LovesTha @rune I see what you mean about the phrasing. There is just so much rehabilitation of bush, blair (and fogh) going on, and none for the people that denounced the invasion and were absolutely smashed by mainstream media back then. I really hoped I could change your mind on this one, but ok, I gotta sleep as well, cheers :)

Uspol, history

@lukas @rune I think I'm more likely to convince Rune that the shoe event doesn't make up for forgetting WWII (claiming a 150 year friendship with Japan)

Uspol, history

@lukas @LovesTha yeah it's hard to imagine the same person in those two scenarios.

Then a few years later we had Obama joke about drone strikes at the hight of civilian casualties to drone strikes...

It's hard to even fathom
